When social media platforms first appeared, they were game-changers for the way we consumed and shared information. Gradually, however, they began to take over our lives, consuming every spare moment and causing us to prioritize virtual interactions over real-life socializing. After countless hours scrolling through feeds, I decided to take a break from social media. In this article, I’ll share my personal journey and the lessons I’ve learnt from it.

Why I Decided to Quit Social Media

At first, social media was a great way to stay informed and connected with friends and family. However, over time, I found myself mindlessly scrolling through feeds, consuming hours of my precious time. The breaking point came when I realized how often I was distracted during social situations, opting to check my phone rather than engaging with the people around me. I realized that I had lost control and decided to take a break.

Firstly, I found myself being much more productive, using my free time to read, exercise and pursue real-life hobbies. Of course, quitting social media didn’t come without its challenges. At the beginning, I felt like I was missing out on important updates and news. I realized that I had formed an unhealthy attachment to my virtual persona, and that disconnecting from it was difficult. However, over time, I began to appreciate the freedom that came with no longer being tied to it. I also faced the challenge of staying connected with friends who were still using social media, but I found creative ways to stay in touch, through phone calls and messaging apps such as WhatsApp.

Lessons Learned

In hindsight, quitting social media was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. It forced me to confront my addiction and form healthier habits. I realized that social media is not an essential part of our lives, and that we can live meaningfully without it. I also learned that it’s important to stay disciplined and mindful, being intentional about the way we spend our time.
