Discovering Albania: My Solo Travel Journey
Albania, a small country in the Balkans, has been wrongly overlooked by many travellers when planning their next adventure. It may lack sandy beaches and iconic landmarks found in other tourist hotspots, but it is the perfect destination for off-the-beaten-path exploration and discovery.
As a seasoned solo traveller, I embarked on this journey to uncover the beauty of Albania, and I wasn’t disappointed. Here are some of the reasons why I fell in love with this lesser-known gem.

As soon as I arrived in Albania, I was welcomed by friendly and hospitable locals who took great pride in their country. They were eager to share their rich history and culture with me and went out of their way to make me feel at home. From offering me traditional food and drinks to inviting me to join in on local festivities, the warmth and kindness of the Albanian people made me feel like one of their own.
The Natural Wonders of Albania
Albania’s diverse and unspoiled natural landscape is unparalleled. From the crystal-clear waters of the Ionian and Adriatic seas to the majestic mountains of the Albanian Alps, it was a nature lover’s paradise. I hiked to the summit of Mount Dajti, experiencing breathtaking views of the city of Tirana, and explored the stunning Blue Eye, a natural spring with crystal-clear blue water.
The Rich History and Culture
Albania boasts a rich history and culture that has been influenced by various civilizations over the centuries. The Ottoman Empire, Roman Empire, and ancient Illyrians have all left their mark on this beautiful country. I visited the historic city of Berat, also known as the “City of a Thousand Windows,” which is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Its white-washed Ottoman houses and Byzantine churches lined the cobblestone streets, and the old bazaar offered a glimpse into the local daily life.
The Authentic and Delicious Food
One of the highlights of my trip to Albania was indulging in the delicious and authentic local food. From the famous fergese, a traditional dish made with peppers and cheese, to the succulent roasted lamb, Albania’s cuisine did not disappoint. I also had the opportunity to try unique desserts like baklava and qumështor, a cake made from milk.
The Affordable and Easy Travel
Travelling around Albania was fast, easy, and cheap. Public transportation was readily available, and the cost of travelling was very affordable. I was able to see everything I wanted to see without breaking the bank.
