Discovering Denmark: Our Family’s Adventure in the Land of the Vikings and Legos
Denmark is a country that is often overshadowed by its more popular Scandinavian neighbors, namely Norway and Sweden. However, this small country has a unique charm that makes it worth a visit, especially for families with children. In this article, we will share our personal experience of exploring Denmark with our kids and why we think it should be on every family’s travel list.
The Land of Vikings and Legos
Denmark’s history is closely tied to the Vikings, a fact that is evident in the country’s many Viking-themed attractions. Our family visited the Viking Ship Museum in Roskilde, where we saw real Viking ships and learned about their history and culture. Another highlight was the Trelleborg Viking Fortress near Slagelse, where we got to walk around the reconstructed fortress and witness a Viking battle reenactment.
On the other hand, Denmark is also famous for being the birthplace of Lego. Every child (and adult!) would enjoy a visit to the Legoland theme park in Billund, where we saw amazing Lego creations and went on thrilling rides. We also visited the Lego House, a museum and play center where we built our own Lego masterpieces.

We went on a scenic drive along the North Sea coast, passing through picturesque villages and stopping to take in the stunning views. We also spent time in the countryside around Silkeborg, where we hiked through forests and saw peaceful lakes.
Another great attraction was the Jutlandic Ridge National Park, where we saw unique landscapes, rare wildlife, and geological formations. It was a great opportunity for the kids to learn about Denmark’s rich natural heritage.

We enjoyed trying traditional Danish food, such as smørrebrød (open sandwiches) and frikadeller (meatballs), as well as delicious pastries like æbelskiver and kanelsnegle. We also visited several museums, such as the National Museum of Denmark in Copenhagen and the ARoS Aarhus Art Museum, which gave us a deeper understanding of Danish art and history.
It was also a great opportunity to experience hygge, a Danish concept of coziness and contentment. We enjoyed spending time in charming cafes and restaurants, and watching the world go by.
