As a Mormon, following the Word of Wisdom is an important part of our faith. However, many of us only focus on the “don’ts” – don’t drink alcohol, don’t smoke, don’t drink coffee or tea. While these restrictions are important, there are also several hidden gems in the Word of Wisdom that we may overlook. In this article, we will explore some of these hidden gems and how they can benefit our physical, mental, and spiritual health.

Most of us are familiar with the Word of Wisdom – a health code revealed to Joseph Smith in 1833. It emphasizes the importance of treating our bodies with respect and living a responsible, healthy lifestyle. However, besides the more popular rules against drinking alcohol and smoking, there are several hidden gems waiting to be discovered in the Word of Wisdom.

Eating a Plant-Based Diet

One of the key hidden gems in the Word of Wisdom is the recommendation to eat a diet primarily consisting of plants. In fact, the scripture specifically says, “Yea, flesh also of beasts and of the fowls of the air, I, the Lord, have ordained for the use of man with thanksgiving; nevertheless they are to be used sparingly” (Doctrine and Covenants 89:12-13).
