As technology improved, so did the size and capabilities of mobile phones. By the 1990s, cell phones had become smaller, lighter, and more affordable. However, these early models still lacked many of the features we take for granted today, such as text messaging, camera, and internet connectivity.
The late 1990s saw the emergence of the first smartphones, such as the Ericsson R380 and Nokia 9000 Communicator. These devices, while bulky, were more powerful than traditional cell phones. They had touch screens, QWERTY keyboards, and could perform basic computing tasks. In 2002, Nokia released the Nokia 7650, which was the first mobile phone to include a camera.
The real transformation of mobile phones, however, happened in the late 2000s with the launch of the first iPhone in 2007. The iPhone was a game-changer, as it introduced a touch screen interface, multi-touch control, and app store, making it possible to do almost anything on a smartphone. This created a new market for mobile applications, with the Apple App Store launching in 2008. Other manufacturers soon followed, and today we have a vast ecosystem of mobile applications available.
