Exploring Oaxaca: My Solo Travel Adventure
Traveling alone can seem daunting, especially if you’re heading to a place that’s unfamiliar to you. But, that’s exactly what I did when I decided to explore Oaxaca, the beautiful city in southern Mexico. Oaxaca offers a magical blend of colonial architecture, indigenous culture, traditional markets, and delicious food. In this article, I’m going to share my solo travel experience in this fascinating place.
Getting There
I flew into Mexico City and then took a bus to Oaxaca. The bus ride was comfortable, and I enjoyed the stunning scenery along the way. There are also flights to Oaxaca, but the bus ride is a more affordable option.
Exploring the City
Once I arrived in Oaxaca, I was immediately struck by the city’s vibrant energy. The streets are filled with colorful buildings and lively street vendors. I started my exploration at the Zocalo, the city’s main square. The Zocalo is surrounded by beautiful colonial-era buildings, and it’s a great place to people-watch while sipping on some delicious local coffee.
From the Zocalo, I walked to Santo Domingo, a stunning church with a beautifully restored interior. The church is a great place to learn about the city’s colonial history and architecture.
Discovering Indigenous Culture
Oaxaca is home to a large indigenous population, and there are many opportunities to learn about their culture. I visited the Benito Juarez market to see local artisans selling their crafts, including colorful woven textiles, embroidered clothing, and pottery. I also visited the Ethnobotanical Garden, which showcases the region’s plant life and traditional uses for medicinal and culinary purposes.
Tasting the Local Food
One of the highlights of my trip to Oaxaca was the amazing food. Oaxaca is known for its regional cuisine, including mole (a rich sauce made with chiles and chocolate), tlayudas (a large, crispy tortilla filled with beans and meat), and mezcal (a locally made spirit). I highly recommend taking a cooking class or a food tour to fully experience the flavors of Oaxaca.
Conclusion
Overall, my solo travel adventure in Oaxaca was a memorable experience. From the colorful streets and stunning architecture to the rich indigenous culture and delicious food, Oaxaca has something to offer for everyone. If you’re considering solo travel to Oaxaca, go for it! You won’t be disappointed.
