How the Keto Diet Ruined My Health and What I Did About It

The ketogenic diet, or the keto diet, has become a popular weight-loss solution over the years. It involves reducing carbohydrates and increasing healthy fats to induce ketosis, a metabolic state where the body uses stored fat as the primary energy source, resulting in rapid weight loss.

However, for some people, the keto diet isn’t all it’s hyped up to be. Unfortunately, I learned this lesson the hard way.

I was a big believer in the keto diet. I had read numerous success stories and was impressed by the weight-loss results that others had achieved. So, I decided to give it a try.

At first, everything seemed to be going well. The pounds were dropping off, and I was feeling more energized than ever before. However, after a few months, I began to experience some troubling symptoms.

My hair started falling out, and my skin became dry and itchy. I also experienced digestive issues, including constipation and bloating. Worst of all, I felt mentally foggy and couldn’t concentrate as well as I used to. It felt as if my brain wasn’t functioning at its best.

I began to research the effects of the keto diet on the body, and I quickly learned that a lack of carbohydrates can lead to nutritional deficiencies. Cutting out entire food groups can cause imbalances in vitamins and minerals that your body needs to function correctly.

Furthermore, a high-fat diet can increase cholesterol levels and harm heart health in the long run. And while weight loss is a desirable outcome, severe calorie restrictions can trigger the body to go into a starvation mode, leading to a slower metabolism.

I needed a solution that would sustain both my weight loss and long term health. After consulting with a nutritionist, I realized that I needed to make a change. I needed to keep the positive aspects of the keto diet while balancing the foods that the diet excludes.

I made the decision to refuel my body with nutrient-dense sources of carbohydrates, like whole grains, fruits, and sweet potatoes. I also added lean protein sources, like chicken and fish, to my diet.

I took a closer look at what I was eating, debriefed myself from the fad diets and was consistent with my exercises. Within a few weeks, I felt better than ever before. My hair stopped falling out, my skin improved, my digestion improved, and my concentration was back to normal.

In conclusion, while the keto diet may work for some individuals, it isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution. It caused me damage, and It is essential to remember that our bodies require a balance of all essential vitamins, minerals, and nutrients. Instead of cutting out vital carbs from your diet, focus on balancing your meals with whole foods and sustainable nutrition choices that you can maintain consistently. Remember, your health should always come before the desire for quick weight loss results.
