Life as an Information Systems Technician in the Navy: My Experience
Introduction
Joining the Navy as an Information Systems Technician (IT) is a unique path that requires discipline, dedication, and commitment. As an IT in the Navy, you will handle complex technologies and be responsible for maintaining, troubleshooting, and upgrading the Navy’s critical communication networks. In this article, we’ll dive deeper into the life of an IT in the Navy and learn from the firsthand experiences of someone who has been in this field.
Training
The IT career in the Navy begins with 9-12 weeks of basic training at the Recruit Training Command (RTC) in Great Lakes, Illinois. This training focuses on developing the necessary skills and knowledge for a successful Navy career. After completing basic training, ITs attend the “A” School, which is a specialized technical training school. The “A” School is where you learn the specific skills required to become an IT, such as computer networking, cyber security, and communication systems. The “A” School can last 26 to 52 weeks, depending on the program.
On-the-Job Training
After completing the “A” School, ITs are assigned to a ship or shore station to gain on-the-job training. This training consists of learning the day-to-day operation of the systems you will be responsible for maintaining and operating. ITs will also learn to troubleshoot, repair, and upgrade the Navy’s communication networks. Your first command will be a challenging experience as you begin working with systems that you have only learned about in the “A” School.
The Regular Workday
The typical IT workday begins at 8:00 AM, with a morning meeting to discuss any issues that may have arisen the previous day. The workday consists mostly of maintaining and upgrading the Navy’s communication networks. As an IT, you will likely spend a lot of time in computer rooms, working on servers and switches. Every IT gets their own desk, which serves as their workspace to work on the various responsibilities of their job.
Deployment
Deployment is a significant part of being an IT in the Navy. During deployments, the ITs are responsible for maintaining the communication network on the ship. They provide support to various departments that require network support, such as ITS (Information Systems Technicians) and CT (Cryptologic Technicians). ITs work 12 hours a day, seven days a week, when the ship is deployed. While it can be challenging, deployments are also an opportunity to see new countries and experience different cultures.
Conclusion
The life of an IT in the Navy is challenging but rewarding. The training and on-the-job experience you receive can prepare you for a prosperous career in the tech field. The discipline and dedication required to be an IT can also prepare you for success in other areas of life. The skills you learn as an IT can help you to land a great career after your service in the Navy is over. If you’re looking for a challenging and rewarding tech career, becoming an IT in the Navy is a great option.
