The History of Medco Health – From Humble Beginnings to Modern Success

Medco Health is a pharmaceutical and healthcare services company that has come a long way since its humble beginnings in Brooklyn, New York in 1928. Throughout its history, Medco has undergone many transformations to become the successful business it is today.

In the early years, Medco Health was known as National Pharmacies, founded by Robert Beck in response to the Great Depression. The goal was to provide affordable prescription drugs to people in need. National Pharmacies expanded throughout the 1930s and 1940s. By 1950, the company had changed its name to Medco, which stands for Medical and Dental Supplies Company.

Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, Medco continued to grow and diversify its offerings. In 1978, the company went public and continued to expand rapidly through acquisitions and partnerships. By the late 1990s, Medco was a leading mail-order pharmacy provider, serving patients across the United States.

In 2003, Medco became an independent company and went public once again. The company expanded its services to include pharmacy benefit management (PBM) and other healthcare services. Medco’s PBM business grew to be one of the largest in the country, managing prescription drug benefits for employers, health insurers, and other groups.

In 2012, Medco merged with Express Scripts, creating the largest PBM company in the United States. The new company, now known as Express Scripts, continued to innovate and expand its offerings, including specialty pharmacy services and home delivery of medical supplies.

Throughout its history, Medco Health has been committed to providing affordable and accessible healthcare services to people across the United States. From its humble beginnings in Brooklyn to its current status as a leading PBM provider, Medco’s journey has been one of innovation and transformation.
