As Christians, we often hear about the importance of following in Jesus’ footsteps. We’re told to love our neighbors, to be forgiving and kind, and to trust in God’s plan. However, one area that is sometimes overlooked is the importance of Jesus growing in wisdom.
In Luke 2:52, it says, “And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man.” This passage emphasizes the importance of Jesus’ intellectual growth, and as Christians, we too should place a high priority on our own intellectual development.
Why is it important for us as Christians to grow in wisdom? For one, wisdom helps us to make better decisions. Proverbs 2:6 says, “For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.” When we seek wisdom from God, we are better equipped to make choices that align with His will.

While formal education is certainly valuable, there are many ways to learn and grow intellectually outside of formal schooling. Reading good books, attending seminars or conferences, and engaging in thoughtful discussions with others are all ways in which we can gain knowledge and understanding.
It’s also important to seek wisdom from God through prayer. James 1:5 says, “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.” When we humbly ask God for wisdom, we can be assured that He will provide it.
